What are Work Based Diplomas and Apprenticeships

Haddon Training is able to offer you the opportunity of undertaking work-based qualifications in Animal Care dependent upon your previous experience and other criteria. For many people the training is government funded and therefore free.

Work Based Diplomas and Apprenticeships are hands on, practical, totally work-based qualifications. You do not need to go to college in order to undertake a Work Based Diploma or Apprenticeship you can train "on the job". This means you can get a job, get paid and get trained. This is very valuable for people working within the rural community, as well as those who for whatever reason, do not wish to go to college.

HT is currently able to support Learners through Diplomas in Work Based Animal Care Levels 1 - 3.

Level 1

This covers the everyday skills of working with horses or other animals. All the work covered by the qualification will be carried out under supervision. This is reflected in the Unit titles that describes "assisting with" tasks and functions. The qualification will provide a good grounding in horse or animal care.

Level 2

This covers the skills of an assistant worker in the equine or animal care industry. It is expected that instructions can be followed and routine tasks carried out efficiently whilst taking personal responsibility for actions. It will be necessary to be able to report accurately to someone with a higher qualification and/or more experience.

Level 3

The Level 3 Diploma in Work Based Animal Care is a management qualification which covers the skills needed to competently perform not only a wide range of routine tasks, but also those of a more complex or unpredictable nature, for example monitoring and adjusting animal diet and health care. Work will also include interacting with clients and dealing with day to day problems as they may arise. There will also be a requirement to supervise others in the work environment, including monitoring and providing feedback on work undertaken.

A Work Based Diploma is a straight forward practical qualification. An Apprenticeship is made up of a framework which at Level 2 in Animal Care incorporates a Work Based Diploma together with Key Skills and GOLA (Global Online Assessment) test; at Level 3 it incorporates the Work Based Diploma with a Technical Certificate, a GOLA test and Key Skills. Both the Horse Care and Animal Care Apprenticeships also require a First Aid qualification. An Apprenticeship at Level 2 is considered equivalent to 5 GCSEs. An Apprenticeship at Level 3 is considered equivalent to 2 A Levels.
