What exactly is an Apprentice?

.Apprenticeships are Government backed, work based courses of training and assessment. These courses lead to an Apprenticeship at Level 2 or an Advanced Apprenticeship qualification. All industries offer NVQs which are individually designed to provide valid and relevant vocational qualifications to suit the particular needs of each working environment. An Apprenticeship is made up of an NVQ, Key Skills, a Technical Certificate, and an Emergency First Aid Certificate.

What is the Learner expected to do at each level of NVQ?

At Level One he or she will work under constant supervision. All the tasks you ask them to undertake will be routine and predictable and carried out under supervision. This is reflected in the unit titles that describe "assisting with" specific tasks and functions.

At Level Two you will expect he or she to work as part of a team, but taking on some individual responsibilities. Some of their activities will become more complex and non-routine.

At Level Three your learner will start to take on considerable responsibility for both themselves and other team members. They will be able by now to apply their knowledge to a wide range of situations.
