Breeding and Breaking

Breeding

This unit, available at both Levels 2 & 3, involves assisting with reproduction parturition and the rearing of young stock.

At Level 2 it will involve:

•holding a quiet mare for teasing and covering
•recognising the signs of a mare in season
•the completion of the appropriate stud records
•the preparation of foaling boxes
•recognising the signs of imminent foaling
•observation of foaling
•handling of a new born foal
•weaning procedure
•preparation of young stock for sales
•establishing the early training of a horse

At Level 3 it will further involve:

•the work involved in getting the mare in foal
•care of the barren mare
•the mare’s receptivity to covering
•pregnancy testing and care for in-foal mares
•the organisation or teasing routines
•documentation for vet, farrier, worming, teasing and covering, paddocks, diaries, charts, teasing books, foaling dates, registrations and nomination forms


Breaking

This unit, available at Level 3 only, is about contributing to the training of young horses. It covers teaching the young horse to accept discipline, the bridle, saddle and rider and will cover:

•introducing the young horse to equipment
•identify the training needs of young horses
•introduce training procedures
•monitor progress and adjust the programme
•leading, long reining or lunging the horse and back the horse
•select and fit suitable tack
•train the horse and introduce the horse to a rider
