Racing

“Horse racing – Over five million people visit the 59 racecourses in Great Britain each year…..The industry is complex, highly professional and multi-skilled with all its component parts interdependent. Race days are the culmination of years of preparation and co-operation between key professionals. Like any industry, racing is only as good as the people who work in it. For the well motivated, able and committed, many of whom have a deep love of the horse racing, it provides an excellent career and boundless opportunities.”

Formerly, under the rules of racing if you were under 19 and wanted to work in a trainer’s yard you would have been required by the Jockey Club to undergo training at either The British Racing School or The Northern Racing College –since 2006 however, that has not been a requirement.

Haddon Training is the only Private 100% Work Based Training Provider in England to have been accredited by the British Horse Racing Education & Standards Trust to support learners through their National Vocational Qualifications and Apprenticeships in Horse Care and Management combining the Racing Option.

Once on the qualification ladder there are many opportunities within the racing industry open to learners who have commitment, dedication, determination, the desire to work outdoors and the confidence to live away from home. These range from Stable Staff, Flat and Jump Jockeys, Travelling Head Lads and Head Lads, to Assistant Trainers. Unlike other areas of the equine industry, the Jockey Club as the governing body expects all employees to undergo training and qualifications and this is directly and beneficially linked to their wage structure. The industry also has its own union – The Stable Lads Association. Once qualified within the Racing Industry, you become part of a world that supports training and qualifications and cares for the interests and future of its staff.

This unit, available at both Levels 2 & 3, involves both a Riding Unit, or a Specialist Racehorse Care Unit for those not wishing to ride. The British Horseracing Education & Standards Trust also has an Equine Rehabilitation Unit available.

At Level 2 either of the two units (Riding or Non-Riding) may involve:

•escorting racehorses to race meetings
•care for racehorses after they have raced
•assisting with the on-going specialist care of racehorses
•assisting with the care of racehorses after strenuous exercise
•riding racehorses on roads or tracks under supervision
•providing routine exercise opportunities for racehorses under supervision

At Level 3 either of the two units (Riding or Non-Riding) may involve:

•riding racehorses to improve performance
•schooling racehorses
•carrying out racecourse procedures
•preparing horses for saddling up and the parade ring
•prepare horses for saddling up and the parade ring
•assist with designing training programmes for horses
•assist with the implementation of training programmes
