College versus Vocational Training

You may decide that the vocational route rather than the college route suits you better because you are more of a "hands on" person. You will also find that another of the benefits of choosing a vocational training route means that you are able to "earn while you learn". Many young people are in the situation whereby they cannot afford not to work, but they do want to further their education. An NVQ or Apprenticeship allows you to get a job, get paid and get trained all at the same time.

College life does suit some people of course; it gives you the opportunity to learn the theoretical side, and to enjoy the many social benefits that a campus environment can offer. However, it is no good thinking that your academic qualifications will automatically move you to a higher rung on the job ladder at the start. Most equine and animal care locations will only consider people if they are willing to start at the bottom, whatever academic qualifications they bring with them. Nine GCSEs do not qualify you to be the manager! It is practical ability, common sense and hard work that gains rewards - not short cuts!
