Do you want to know how an apprenticeship will help launch and develop your professional career goals?

As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we caught up with Jayne Sandiford, one of our brilliant Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) apprentices. Based at her family’s yard, Ashton Vale Stables, Jayne explains how her apprenticeship has supported her professional dressage career.

Jayne says, “I’ve always loved being around horses and I started riding from a young age. I was fortunate to receive training from professional dressage rider, Lesley Payton Gilbert, who taught me the basics of all the equine disciplines. I didn’t really enjoy school and my parents were extremely supportive in allowing me to look at alternative further education routes.

I remember first hearing about Haddon Training’s Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) apprenticeship. After meeting the initial course criteria, I couldn’t believe my luck; my professional career in equine was about to begin! The programme was great and my Coach, David Prior, was always contactable if I needed help, and he motivated and pushed me to remain focused and on task during our residential AASE camps.

My apprenticeship gave me a much broader understanding about all the different aspects which are important when working and training horses, not just riding. I particularly enjoyed learning about mental health and nutrition, which has enabled me to become a better athlete. The programme improved my confidence and I have since gained experience handling and riding different types of horses. My stable management has also improved, and I can confidently communicate with fellow professionals, clients, and trainers.

Each module of the apprenticeship gave me an in depth understanding and knowledge which I’m able to implement now into my daily job. I’m able to contribute with the development of other apprentices by leading by example too.  I often help train them on the job as I can relate to their situation. Together we overcome difficulties by talking it through and coming up with positive solutions.

Moving forward, as an athlete, I’m now working with a young horse and hoping to move him up through the levels in dressage. Professionally, I’m looking into equine coaching and equine sports massage courses because these can be completed alongside my current role. In the future, I hope to be further involved in running our yard, Ashton Vale Stables.  My apprenticeship has allowed me to pursue my passion in equine and develop the skills needed to excel in this amazing industry.”
