Succeeding in Showjumping
To celebrate the launch of our brand new programme, British Showjumping Diploma in Sporting Excellence (DiSE)(BS), we caught up with our AASE Alumni as they share their experience and achievements so far.
The new DiSE (BS) programme is an alternative to the legal requirement of staying in education instead of formerly going onto Further Education or Sixth Form. Learners can choose this as their mandatory education, which is delivered in a relevant and inspiring environment, and benefit from training with Showjumping’s top coaches. Selected talented riders will be stretched and challenged to improve their skills and how to manage all aspects of life to become top performing riders. Successful candidates are expected to work-hard and demonstrate a commitment through-out the programme.
Our 2017 ASSE Graduate Ambassadors have had successful achievements since graduating. They share their experience since being on programme and what they have accomplished so far.
I decided to apply for the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence programme as I was looking for a qualification to support my riding. I learned how to plan my career with long-term goals in mind. I particularly enjoyed the media module. We had the chance to have ‘mock interviews’ with BBC presenter Lizzie Greenwood-Hughes. We did video analysis of these interviews and received useful feedback. I also enjoyed doing strength and conditioning – it made me realise how important it is to be in good personal shape, as well as getting the horses fit. I would recommend the AASE programme to anyone looking to further their knowledge and skills in the equestrian industry. I loved every minute of my time on the course and have made friends for life.
I learned a lot throughout my time on the programme, but the most important thing I learned was to work as a team and to respect my peer’s opinions and thoughts. I learned many physical and tactical elements that I have now implemented into my daily routine. Since graduating, I have competed in many Grand Prix’s, become much more competitive and I feel very comfortable under pressure. I am now competing full time, and I have just finished at a show in Sancort, France.
I had the pleasure to work with top industry experts, Matt Lanni, Corine Bracken and Andrew Saywell, during my time on the programme. I got a real sense of personal and sporting achievement out of the AASE programme. If you’re serious about your sport you have to add the technical and professional attitude to your mix: just jumping on a horse at the weekend will only get you so far. If you’re serious about competing, the AASE programme is the perfect next step – there’s a lot of hard work to do, but when you have accomplished and graduated from the training, it feels great!
I’m currently a Showjumping scholar, studying Equine Business Management at Hartpury University. I would recommend the course, not only to receive top training and knowledge, but to receive a qualification out of it also. I really enjoyed meeting new people on the course, I have made some lifelong friends from it. The AASE programme has helped me a lot with having a recognised qualification on my CV. I will apply all the learning and experience from the course within my Equine career.
I chose the AASE programme as it was great for developing and preparing me to excel in my sport, whilst helping me on my way to competing internationally. It was a chance to improve my skills whilst learning how to manage all aspects of life as a professional in Showjumping. With the added benefit of training with some of Showjumping’s top coaches. Since being in the course I have excelled in my organisational skills for many international and national competitions and allowed for me to achieve a deeper understanding of the technical and tactical aspects that goes into training and developing my young horses, allowing for me to create effective plans and goals to bring them on and allow them to reach their potential.
