Haddon Training is launching multiple Equine Transport courses across England and Wales!

Animal welfare legislation requires anybody who transports horses in connection with an economic activity (for business purposes) on journeys to hold a Certificate of Competence. We deliver the 1st4sport Level 3 Awards in the Principles of Transporting Horses on Short Journeys and Long Journeys.

These 1st4sport qualifications are to ensure the welfare of the horses is managed during transport, they are not HGV or driving qualifications.

Our courses are split into two, short or long journeys:

Level 3 Award in the Principles of Transporting Horses by Road on Short Journeys.

This covers journeys of over 65km, but not exceeding eight hours including time at the event (competition/ racecourse). Any passenger who has a responsibility for the horse(s)’ welfare during transport or at the event, must also hold a Certificate of Competence (Attendant).

To achieve this Award you will be expected to:

  • know the legal requirements for horse welfare during transportation
  • understand horse stress and how to deal with it
  • know how to effectively plan and transport horses
  • understand safe, efficient and effective loading, operation and control.

Level 3 Award in the Principles of Transporting Horses on Long Journeys (Attendant/Driver)

This covers short and long journeys, exceeding eight hours.

For the Attendant option the Candidates must show an understanding of:

  • The legislation and procedures of transporting horses
  • The well-being of the horse during transport and the planning and preparation for transporting a horse
  • The Candidate must also demonstrate practical skills in loading and unloading horses
  • Caring for the horse during transportation
  • Maintain equine transport in a hygienic condition

For the Attendant/Driver option the Candidates must show an understanding of:

  • The legislation and procedures of transporting horses
  • The well-being of the horse during transport and the planning and preparation for transporting a horse
  • The Candidate must also demonstrate practical skills in loading and unloading horses
  • Caring for the horse during transportation
  • Transport horses safely on the highway
  • Maintain equine transport in a hygienic condition
