We caught up with Lucy Jones, a Haddon Training Learner and Apprentice Groom at Triley Fields Equestrian Centre, near Abergavenny, South Wales.

Set in 380 acres of pasture land and hacking, Triley Fields offers riding lessons, livery, training, hosts competitions and has a number of horses and ponies for sale – meaning there is always something going on!

We ask Lucy to tell us more…

How long have you worked at Triley Fields?
I’ve been here since October 2018.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship rather than college?
I have already been to college and had a job, but I wanted a new challenge on a different career path. An apprenticeship felt like a great fit.

What do you find is your biggest challenge?
Getting my riding up to standard is challenging, but we do get to ride every day which really helps.

What do you like/dislike about being an apprentice?
The wages are a bit different after working a ‘normal’ job, but the learning on the job aspect is really beneficial. I am working my way towards my BHS Stage 1 exam and hope to go on to take stages 2 & 3 with a view to becoming an instructor.

What are you looking forward to in 2019?
Hopefully passing my BHS Stage 1 exam, ride and care.

Lucy is not just a talented apprentice – outside work she has also played for a local Hockey team, has danced for the Mid Wales Academy and is a self-confessed car enthusiast!
