60 Years of Cotswold RDA: Jane’s Volunteer Story

As part of our celebrations marking 60 years of Cotswold RDA, we’re shining a spotlight on the incredible volunteers who help make the charity’s work possible. Jane has been a part of the Cotswold RDA family for nearly four years, bringing passion, warmth, and support to every session. Here, she shares what inspired her to return to volunteering, and the special moments that make it all worthwhile.

How long have you been volunteering with Cotswold RDA, and what inspired you to get involved?

I started volunteering at Cotswold RDA nearly four years ago. I bumped into Head Groom, Holly, exercising the ponies during lockdown and struck up a conversation. I mentioned I’d been a volunteer thirty years ago while nursing my Dad, and was looking at retirement. Holly kindly said, “perhaps you may want to come back to it”? The rest is history, as they say…

Can you describe a typical session or role you might have when supporting the riders?

I usually lead the pony during the lesson and make sure the rider is comfortable and enjoying themselves. Side walking is another role, where you can positively engage with the rider, helping with posture and general riding basics, encouraging them to be engaged and focused. We play various games where they have to collect items around the arena, which gives a sense of achievement and confidence – lots of happy faces!

What’s one of your most memorable or rewarding moments at Cotswold RDA?

I really enjoy the moments when riders first ride independently. Seeing them steer around cones on their own and take control of our special ponies is hugely rewarding. And the look on the parents’, teachers’, or carers’ faces – it’s powerful stuff!

How have you seen the riders benefit from their time with the horses and ponies?

One of my favourite moments was watching one of our riders win at the RDA National Championships. That, and all the lovely friendships that being part of the RDA family brings. “Pony pals” as I call them! I totally love it and feel blessed to have reignited my passion for all things pony. Now it’s my time to help others, and I would recommend it to anyone.
