Meet Ruby, who is currently completing her Level 3 Senior Equine Groom apprenticeship through Haddon Training at Swallowfield Equestrian. Ruby shared her journey, from her first riding lesson at four years old to her passion for learning more about horse care and management, and her exciting goals for the future.
What inspired you to pursue a career working with horses?
I’ve always been a massive animal lover! When I was four, I had my first riding lesson and ever since then, my love for horses just grew. Growing up, I spent countless hours volunteering at a local riding school where I fell in love with all sorts of different horses and ponies, each with their funny quirks and personalities. Horses are now such a big part of my daily life and I couldn’t imagine it any other way. I find them fascinating and so loving, and I want to dedicate my life to understanding and caring for them.
What aspects of your Level 3 Senior Equine Groom qualification have you enjoyed the most and working at Swallowfield Equestrian?
I’ve really enjoyed expanding my knowledge of anatomy and physiology. I feel much more confident knowing the correct terminology and being able to spot faulty conformation more easily. I’ve also really appreciated the atmosphere at Swallowfield Equestrian – the support from both the liveries and staff has been amazing. I’ve always had assistance when needed, as well as lots of opportunities to practice my skills.
One of my favourite parts has been getting involved with show days. Being part of that competition community and seeing so many hardworking people and horses has really motivated me in my own riding.
What achievement are you most proud of to date?
I’m most proud of how easily I can now spot problems, such as if a horse looks lame or shows signs of inflammation. I’ve also become confident enough to speak out if I notice something out of character and think it should be investigated further.
What has your experience been like as an apprentice with Haddon Training?
Doing an apprenticeship with Haddon has been amazing! My Trainer Coach, Scarlett, has helped me massively and I always really enjoy our sessions. She’s always so understanding and really knows her stuff. It makes a huge difference having a coach who goes the extra mile and makes the whole experience exciting.
What are your aspirations for the future?
Once I’ve completed my Level 3 Senior Equine Groom qualification, I’d like to continue progressing through the BHS stages and work towards becoming a manager and groom. I’m also interested in going down the teaching route and backing horses – that’s definitely something I want to pursue in the future.
