Meet Level 3 Senior Equine Groom apprentice, Esmay

Meet Esmay, who is currently completing her Level 3 Senior Equine Groom apprenticeship at Southill Stables. Growing up around horses, Esmay developed a passion for equestrian life from an early age. She shares what inspired her journey, the most rewarding parts of her apprenticeship so far, and her exciting ambitions for the future.

What inspired you to pursue a career working with horses?

I’ve always grown up around horses and very quickly fell in love with them and the sport. Being around them has always felt natural to me, and I knew early on that I wanted to turn that passion into a career.

What aspects of your Level 3 Senior Equine Groom qualification have you enjoyed the most, and what’s it like working at Southill Stables?

I really enjoy working with the young horses at Southill Stables. Each one has a completely different personality and teaches me something new. It’s helped me build a wide range of skills and gain valuable experience that I can also use when working with my own horse.

What achievement are you most proud of to date?

I’m incredibly proud of my young horse for starting British Showjumping this year and recently completing his first 1.05m round. It was a big milestone for us, and I couldn’t have achieved it without the amazing support and guidance from Claire, my instructor and boss.

What has your experience been like as an apprentice with Haddon Training?

My experience has been really positive – I’m constantly learning new skills and gaining confidence in how to handle different situations quickly and effectively.

What are your aspirations for the future?

My long-term goal is to become a BHS instructor and specialise in working with young or nervous horses. I have a nervous horse myself, so I understand how important patience and confidence-building are. Helping horses grow in trust and ability is something I find truly rewarding, and I hope to make that a central part of my future career.
