Shannon Achieves Distinction in our AESE Programme

We’re thrilled to celebrate Shannon, one of our amazing Apprenticeship in Equestrian Sporting Excellence (AESE) learners, who has achieved a Distinction in her AESE qualification! This is a fantastic achievement not only for Shannon but also a proud moment for everyone involved in supporting her journey – including our specialist coaches, mentors, and End-Point Assessment Organisation, 1st4Sport.

We caught up with Shannon to hear more about her experience on the AESE programme – the highlights that stood out to her and the valuable skills she has gained along the way.

What inspired you to apply and take part in the AESE programme?

I really wanted to expand my showjumping knowledge further, so when I saw the AESE programme advertised, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity. It’s an honour in itself to be accepted onto the programme, but I was especially proud to be doing it while working solely with young horses.

Can you describe a specific moment or experience during the AESE programme that helped your development?

Young horses are both rewarding and challenging, and the regular training camps were key to my development. They really helped improve my goal-setting skills, which in turn enhanced the horses’ performance under saddle. I particularly benefited from flatwork sessions with Charlie Hutton and jumping sessions with Andrew Saywell.

Which aspect of the programme have you enjoyed the most?

Aside from the on-horse training, I really valued having access to all the elements that make up a professional athlete. Support in areas like strength and conditioning, nutrition, sports psychology, veterinary and farriery care, and clean sport training really elevated not just the horses’ development, but my own performance as well.

What was your experience of working with the specialist coaches and staff?

I had amazing support from AESE coach, Matt Lanni and my AESE mentor, Jessica Coltman throughout the course. They helped massively with the academic side of things, making the course feel manageable and less overwhelming. Their knowledge and guidance were incredibly valuable.

How did it feel to receive the news that you had achieved a Distinction?

The AESE programme requires a lot of commitment, and you really do have to work hard to succeed. That’s why I’m so pleased to say I achieved a Distinction – it feels amazing and makes all the effort worthwhile!

“Haddon Training set the standard as our first EPA training provider to deliver the L3 Sporting Excellence professional standard – equestrian option. Their passion and professionalism have made working together a true pleasure, and it’s great hear that Shannon found the apprenticeship so valuable. We look forward to continuing our support as AESE thrives and grows.”
