From Apprentice to Head Travelling Person: Genevieve’s Story

We recently caught up with Genevieve (Gen), who has completed both the Level 2 and Level 3 Racing Groom apprenticeships and is now a full-time member of the team at DML Racing. Gen shares what day-to-day life is really like at the yard, and why she believes learning on-the-job has given her a crucial edge in her development.

You’ve completed both the Level 2 and Level 3 Racing Groom apprenticeships. What has that journey been like for you and what’s your favourite part of the job?

It’s been a great experience. For me, the best part is the bond you build with the horses. I work with the same ones every day – caring for them, helping them through injuries – and then I get to take them racing. Seeing them go on to win is just incredible. You spend so much time with them, they honestly start to feel like part of your family.

What is it like working at DML Racing?

It’s like a little piece of heaven, to be honest. We’re in our own little bubble – not like one of your busier yards. Sometimes you just want to come to work, ride your horses, do your job, and be in a peaceful place. That’s exactly what it’s like here.

How did the apprenticeship route help you get to where you are today?

The apprenticeship through Haddon really worked for me. I think if I’d gone to one of the bigger training centres with loads of people, it wouldn’t have been the same. With Haddon, I had one-to-one support, and I was learning directly on the job, with people like Mark and Claire (Owners of DML Racing) here every day guiding me. Even when my Haddon Trainer Coach wasn’t there, I was still learning constantly from everyone around me.

What was it like having Haddon Training’s support throughout your journey?

The support from Haddon has been fantastic. Having your Trainer Coach visit regularly to track your progress and help with any challenges made a real difference.

Would you recommend the apprenticeship route to others thinking about a career in racing?

100%, yes. It just makes sense – you get proper, hands-on learning, real feedback, and you’re working in a professional environment from day one. I’ve seen it in others too – one of the younger girls just starting her apprenticeship here has already come such a long way. You can see the switch go off in their head, and suddenly they’re just part of the team.
