It’s Good Employment Week! This week, we’re shining a light on employers who go the extra mile to create supportive, inspiring workplaces where people can truly thrive. Today, we’re celebrating Emma Forsyth Equestrian, a business dedicated to developing talent and championing wellbeing through outstanding employment practices. We spoke to Emma Forsyth to find out more about her journey, her passion for coaching, and her experience of working with apprentices.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself, your history in the industry and your business?
Most of my equestrian career was as an International Event Rider, which gave me the chance to work with some incredible horses and travel to some amazing venues. Since starting a family, I’ve taken a step in a slightly different direction – focusing more on Dressage and on producing young horses for both eventing and dressage.
I’ve also built my own stable complex from the ground up, which has allowed me to create a really positive, professional environment for both horses and people. Alongside that, I do a lot of coaching – I’m a Level 3 Coach – and I think that background has really helped me transfer my skills into supporting and developing apprentices.
When did you first start hiring apprentices, and what motivated you to take this step?
I’ve had apprentices in the past and have always believed that the best way to learn about horses is through practical, hands-on experience. There’s only so much you can gain from the classroom, and being around the horses every day and learning from real situations is invaluable. When I opened my own stables, it felt like a natural step to bring apprentices back into the team. It’s a great way to share knowledge and help the next generation gain confidence and skills in a supportive environment.
What benefits have you seen in your business from having apprentices on your team?
Having apprentices brings a lovely sense of energy and enthusiasm to the yard. It creates a team atmosphere where everyone is learning and working towards the same goal. It’s also really rewarding to see them grow – from their first day to becoming confident, capable members of the team. Having apprentices also keeps me thinking about how I explain things and how to make sure they get the most from each task, which in turn helps me improve as a coach and employer.
How has your experience been working with Haddon Training?
Working with Haddon Training has been brilliant. They make the process really straightforward and are always there to support both myself and the apprentices. The Trainer Coaches are friendly, approachable and genuinely want to see the apprentices succeed.
It feels like a proper partnership, and I know I can pick up the phone and get advice or guidance whenever I need it.
