As part of Good Employment Week, we’re celebrating employers who go above and beyond to support their teams and create opportunities for growth and development in the equine industry.
We spoke to Fiona Maynard, a para dressage rider, current member of the World Class Programme, and owner of Fiona Maynard Dressage in Kent, about her experience with apprenticeships and her commitment to developing young talent.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself, your history in the industry and your business?
I am a para dressage rider and current member of the World Class Programme. I have worked within the industry all of my life, starting my journey as an apprentice myself, and I now run my own livery and training business in Kent.
When did you first start hiring apprentices, and what motivated you to take this step?
I have had apprentices for several years, as I feel strongly about helping young people achieve their dreams. The apprenticeship scheme helps prepare them to excel in the industry and gives an all-round, on-the-job education, which makes candidates more likely to succeed in a highly competitive industry and gives them better career opportunities.
What benefits have you seen in your business from having apprentices on your team?
Having apprentices helps to raise standards within the workplace, as it keeps the whole team up to date, encouraging everyone to learn and work together. It enables you to train them to suit your own business, whilst meeting industry standards, and have a lot of fun along the way.
How has your experience been working with Haddon Training?
Haddon Training offers a structured and supportive scheme, helping both the apprentice and employer to navigate the process, preparing the candidate for the industry as well as the Apprenticeship Assessment. Having a designated Trainer Coach, who does regular in-person visits and training, as well as always being available on the end of the phone, has been invaluable.
