Keira joined Litchfield Equestrian straight after secondary school with no horse care experience. Now, she’s a Level 3 Senior Equine Groom apprentice, full of confidence, knowledge, and a real passion for horses. We sat down with her to hear about her journey and why she recommends apprenticeships to anyone looking to get hands-on in the equine world.
Hi Keira! Can you tell us a bit about how you got started in your apprenticeship?
I started as an apprentice at Litchfield Equestrian right after leaving secondary school. I actually helped out during the summer before my apprenticeship began, which really helped me settle in, get to know the staff here, and learn the yard routine. I didn’t know anything about horses at the time, but everyone was so supportive, and I quickly picked things up.
How have you found your apprenticeship experience?
It’s been amazing. I’ve never really got on well in a classroom environment, so learning practically has worked so much better for me. Doing the apprenticeship in a hands-on setting has made such a difference.
You’re now doing your Level 3 Senior Equine Groom. What’s that been like so far?
It’s going really well! I completed my Level 2 Equine Groom apprenticeship and just missed out on a distinction by a couple of marks. I was so close, but it motivated me even more to aim high for my Level 3.
I learned so much during Level 2, so I’ve come into the Level 3 with a solid understanding already. It feels like I’m building on what I already know rather than starting from scratch, which makes it a lot easier.

What’s the difference between the college route and doing an apprenticeship, in your view?
Some of my friends went to college, and a few have said they find the coursework boring or hard to focus on in a classroom. I feel lucky because I get to be out working with horses, learning all the time. I’m constantly talking about what I’ve learned – especially about horse anatomy. I find it so interesting, especially thinking about how horses have evolved.
Are you supporting any of the newer apprentices now?
Yes! We’ve got some new Level 2 apprentices here, and I’ve been helping them out. I’ve been giving them tips and little phrases to help them remember the names of bones and parts of the skeleton.
Finally, what do you enjoy the most about working at Litchfield Equestrian?
It’s honestly a great place to work. I’ve picked things up really quickly here because it’s such a supportive environment. The whole team is lovely, and we all work really well together – if someone’s struggling with something, there’s always someone ready to help out.
Phil and Barbara, who run Litchfield, are brilliant and really supportive. If we make a mistake, we’re not told off – we’re shown how to do it right and given constructive feedback, which makes such a difference when you’re learning. We all get on really well as a team, and if someone’s struggling, there’s always someone willing to step in and help.
