Lucy’s Journey: Equine Groom Apprentice at Cotswold RDA

Lucy is nearing completion of her Level 2 Equine Groom apprenticeship at Cotswold RDA, where she has been developing her practical skills and gaining valuable experience in a supportive and rewarding environment. From discovering her love of horses at a young age to building a career doing what she loves, Lucy’s journey highlights the power of hands-on learning in the equine industry.

What inspired you to pursue a career with horses?

My love of horses when I was 7, and it has always been my dream to work with them as a job – to be paid to do something I love! Horses have always made me happy.

What have you enjoyed most about your apprenticeship and your work placement?

I’ve enjoyed the hands-on learning experience, as that’s how I learn best. I never enjoyed school for this reason – I’m definitely more of a practical person! I’ve absolutely loved being at Cotswold RDA, learning alongside another apprentice. I’ve had lots of different opportunities which have helped my learning. The ponies are amazing, and it’s great being a part of such an amazing charity!

Have you faced or overcome any challenges during your apprenticeship? If so, how did you manage them?

My biggest challenge would have been starting somewhere new after being at the same yard for 14 years! Thankfully, the team at Cotswold RDA welcomed me, and with their help I was able to excel in my apprenticeship.

How has your experience been as an apprentice with Haddon Training?

My experience has been positive – I’ve learnt new skills that will help me in the future.

What are your goals for the future?

My future aspirations are to carry on progressing in my current job role as a Groom/Coach at Cotswold RDA. I will continue on my coaching journey.
