For National Apprenticeship Week, we’re shining a spotlight on Megan, who is completing her Level 3 Senior Racing Groom apprenticeship at Charlie Longsdon Racing. Megan shares how her passion for horses led her into racing, the skills she’s developed during
What inspired you to pursue a career in racing?
Having grown up with horses and taking part in Pony Club from a young age, I always knew I wanted to work with them. It was when Rachael Blackmore won the Grand National that really sparked my interest in racing.
What have you enjoyed the most about your apprenticeship?
I think the thing I’ve enjoyed most is learning new skills that I can use in my day-to-day work. I love my work placement at Charlie Longsdon Racing, and having been here for almost two years now, I feel like I’ve progressed so much during that time.
Have you faced or overcome any challenges during your apprenticeship? If so, how did you manage them?
I’ve faced a couple of setbacks due to injuries, with one resulting in surgery and a long period off work. However, I’ve come back even stronger, and I was massively helped by my employer, who supported me in using Oaksey House to speed up my recovery.
How has your experience been as an apprentice with Haddon Training?
My experience with Haddon Training has been really good, and I can’t wait to continue learning more throughout the rest of my apprenticeship.
What are your goals for the future?
I’d love to keep developing my skills within racing, and one day I’d like to be a travelling head or second travelling, as going racing is definitely one of my favourite parts of the job.
