The end of the summer holidays can bring a mixture of excitement and anxiety. For learners with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), returning to education after several weeks away from their usual routine can feel particularly challenging.

Making the transition easier
Simple things can make a big difference. Talking through a learner’s timetable, using visual plans, reconnecting with familiar staff or helping them understand what to expect can reduce uncertainty.
The aim isn’t to remove every change, but to make change feel manageable and give learners time to adjust.

Every learner is different. While some may settle quickly, others may need more time to feel comfortable. A learner struggling with their first few sessions isn’t necessarily refusing to engage. They may be communicating that the transition feels difficult.
Taking a patient and individualised approach allows staff to understand what support is needed and recognise progress, however small.
Building confidence through practical learning
For some learners, Alternative Education can provide a different approach to returning to learning.
Practical activities can offer structure while helping young people develop confidence, independence, communication and social skills. At an equine or animal-based placement, this could be something as simple as grooming a horse, preparing feed or helping with familiar routines.
