We spoke to Jemma Lewis, Director of Kitbridge Hollow on the Isle of Wight, about her experience in the industry and her commitment to training the next generation through apprenticeships.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself, your history in the industry and your business?
Having worked at most riding schools on the Island and wanting more input into what we teach riders and grooms, I decided to open my own in 2014.
When did you first start hiring apprentices, and what motivated you to take this step?
I believe we started with our first apprentices in 2016, and since then we’ve had between one and four every year. I find it really important to have apprentices, especially in our industry, as it allows us to train the next generation straight from school age – when riders are at their most passionate about horses.
What benefits have you seen in your business from having apprentices on your team?
It’s such a physical job that getting hands-on experience while learning helps develop a strong work ethic.
How has your experience been working with Haddon Training?
Having worked with a few other training providers over the years, I can honestly say that Haddon Training are the only providers I will now work with and recommend. The level of training expected, and the communication between apprentices, Haddon, and employers, is always at a high level — with any problems sorted almost immediately.
