Our Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AESE) programme is a further education option that helps young showjumping, eventing, dressage and para dressage athletes reach their full potential. AESE is run in proud partnership with British Showjumping and British Eventing and is recognised as part of British Equestrian’s Performance Pathway.
We recently spoke to showjumper, Jamie, who is currently an athlete on our Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AESE) programme. Jamie reflects on the personal growth he has experienced so far, the value of teamwork, and the impact of learning from specialist coaches.
What inspired you to apply and take part in AESE?
I was inspired to apply to AESE because it aligns strongly with my interest in leadership, personal development, and making a meaningful impact. AESE’s emphasis on excellence, collaboration, and real-world problem solving stood out to me as an environment where I could both challenge myself and grow alongside motivated peers.
Have you faced any challenges during the programme? If so, how did you manage them?
Yes, one of the main challenges I faced during the AESE programme was balancing its demands with my academic and personal responsibilities. The programme required consistent commitment, teamwork, and time management, which was initially challenging. I managed this by prioritising tasks, setting clear goals, and communicating openly with my team to ensure we stayed aligned and supported one another.
Which aspect of the programme have you enjoyed the most?
I enjoyed how hands-on the programme was. Rather than just learning in theory, I was able to actively participate, challenge myself, and see real personal growth. AESE has been an experience that not only developed my skills but also helped me build meaningful connections that I genuinely value.
How did you find the learning experience and the specialist coaches that were involved?
The specialist coaches played a key role in shaping this experience. They were approachable, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in our development. Their guidance, feedback, and real-world insights helped me gain clarity, build confidence, and better understand my strengths and areas for growth. Learning from professionals with such experience made the programme both inspiring and impactful.
What are your future aspirations?
I would love to make it to the top of the sport one day and become successful in the showjumping industry, but time will tell!
