Helen Martin has been championing apprenticeships for over 15 years, creating opportunities for young people to learn, grow, and thrive in the equine industry. We caught up with Helen to hear about her business, her approach to developing talent, and the benefits apprentices bring to her team.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself, your history in the industry and your business?
My name is Helen Martin and I run a livery and competition yard at Stockley in Wiltshire. I am a Level 5 British Horse Society Performance Coach and have competed at international 5* level eventing.
When did you first start hiring apprentices, and what motivated you to take this step?
I have hired apprentices for over 15 years and was motivated to take this step because I enjoy nurturing talent. Having previously taught many of the apprentices I took on, I had already identified their future ability.
I was also fortunate to gain invaluable experience myself through working pupil positions and enjoy putting something back into the industry that I have been fortunate to work within.
What benefits have you seen in your business from having apprentices on your team?
My business has benefited from having apprentices, as they have often stayed on in full-time employment upon completing their apprenticeship, with individuals often progressing to take on more responsibilities and opportunities.
How has your experience been as an apprentice with Haddon Training?
Both my apprentices and I have enjoyed working with Haddon Training. My apprentices have felt fully supported throughout their apprenticeship by their workplace trainer, and as an employer, that has given me reassurance that my apprentices feel both encouraged and happy.
