What is AESE?
The Apprenticeship in Equestrian Sporting Excellence (AESE) programme is a unique apprenticeship designed to support talented equestrian athletes in developing both their sporting performance and professional skills. The course combines practical learning, expert coaching, and personal development to help athletes succeed both in and out of competition.
AESE is delivered in partnership with British Showjumping and British Eventing and forms part of the British Equestrian Performance Pathway.
Who is AESE for?
AESE is designed for ambitious equestrian athletes aged 16–18 who are competing at a high level and are committed to developing their riding career alongside valuable life and workplace skills. We accept athletes focusing on the equestrian Olympic Disciplines of Showjumping, Eventing, Dressage or Para Dressage.
Is AESE a recognised qualification?
Yes. AESE is a fully accredited and nationally recognised Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship. Please note: AESE currently does not carry UCAS points.
Do athletes need to be employed?
Yes. Because AESE is an apprenticeship, all athletes must be employed for the duration of the programme.
If required, we can support applicants in finding a suitable apprenticeship position. We work with a wide network of professional employers across England who support AESE athletes across the disciplines.
Do I need to own a horse to apply?
No. Athletes do not need to own a horse to take part in AESE.
However, learners must have access to a horse for the duration of the programme, whether that is through ownership, loan, lease, training, or through their employer. Horses are also required for specialist camps.
Where is AESE delivered and how long does the programme last?
AESE is based in England and delivers six specialist camps, each spanning two days. Camps are held at locations across England and are planned where possible around key competition schedules. The AESE programme lasts 15 months in total (12 months + 3 months apprenticeship assessment).
What will I learn?
The programme develops a broad range of knowledge, skills, and behaviours across areas including:
- Tactical and technical performance

Who delivers the coaching and support?
Every AESE athlete is allocated a vocationally experienced Trainer Coach who supports them throughout the programme. Athletes also work with a specialist multidisciplinary team and world-class coaches across the disciplines.
What are the entry requirements?
Entry requirements vary depending on discipline and competition level. For eligibility criteria, download our brochure here. We are committed to being as inclusive as possible, and athletes who feel they are close to the criteria are encouraged to apply for consideration on a case-by-case basis.
How is AESE assessed?
AESE is assessed through an independent apprenticeship assessment process, which includes:
- A multiple-choice knowledge test
- A practical observation
- A professional interview supported by a portfolio of evidence
Athletes are only entered for assessment when both they and their Trainer Coach feel they are ready.
Are English and maths qualifications required?
Athletes may need to complete Functional Skills qualifications in English and/or maths if they have not already achieved GCSE grade 4/C or above in these subjects.
For learners aged 19 and over, Functional Skills are optional.
